Homework Guidelines
-
Dear Parents,
Kindergarten will begin weekly homework after the first few weeks of school. Homework is given on Mondays and is to be returned on Fridays. Completion of homework will be tracked weekly through a sticker log. We hope that homework will (1) build a sense of responsibility in students, (2) give opportunities for parent-child interaction and (3) allow for extra practice of skills learned in school.
PART 1~ READING
Reading is required daily. It is encouraged that parents read to their child daily. Reading includes:
*child being read to by a proficient reader (i.e. sibling, grandparent, sitter)
*child reading to an adult
*child reading by him/herself
Please log the title of the book or books read each night. A parent signature is required at the end of each week.
PART 2~ WRITING
Two journal pages are to be completed each week. Encourage your child to write down the “sounds” they hear in the words. It is developmentally appropriate, that at this level, not all the words will be spelled correctly. Praise your child for the sounds he/she hears. Remind your child that they can use the Kindergarten word chart for sight words. DO NOT have your child copy adult writing! This is not helpful. Have your child point and read their writing to you when finished.
PART 3~ OCCASIONAL, EXTRA HOMEWORK
*Opportunities for math practice will be available in the homework math book that will be sent home.
*Teachers may assign special homework periodically. They will give you notice ahead of time.
Thank you for your support in your child’s education!
Sincerely,
The Kindergarten Teachers
