Ms. Dulce Sixtos
Me
My name is Dulce Sixtos and I am a Special Education teacher at Orangethorpe Elementary. It is my absolute pleasure to provide special education services under IDEA for students in the Mild-Moderate Special Day Class (SDC) setting to students with a wide variety of needs. Some of these needs include but are not limited to Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Intellectual Disabilities (ID), Autism, Emotional Disturbances (ED), and others. I also work with an amazing community of professionals and enjoy learning from them daily.
Coming from a long line of educators I knew I wanted to work in the field. After receiving my B.A. in Early Childhood Education and scoping my credential options, I initially had not thought about getting into Special Education. It was actually quite scary to me at the time. Little did I know that certain life changing situations would provide me with a change of heart. All of a sudden, Special Education was knocking at my door. Through personal experiences with my children, one whom suffered a cerebral infarction at 10 months old and one who experienced a speech delay, I knew what I had to do. Special Education became a family matter. I became fully involved in tackling my reluctance and initiated my journey through the M.A. in Cross-cultural Education with Special Education Credential. I found myself in the best position I could to understand my children, guide them, and serve students that would need me just as much.
I'm the mother of two grade school children. Lucky enough to have a boy and a girl. Unlike my children, who are more into the fine arts, I'm a soccer fanatic. I love to play it, watch it, and live it.
As a Mexican-American English Learner I feel like I identify so much with our Southern Californian communities. My mother is a retired elementary school teacher and she set such a high bar as an educator and community engagement activist. She's been an inspiration through the ages.
I'm essentially a happy-go-lucky individual who loves to work with children. I give people the benefit of the doubt and see the potential in every single one of them. I like to have a positive outlook in life and am learning to understand that it's o.k. to not feel "happy" all the time. A practice I am bringing from understanding my students through emotionally responsive techniques.
