The Cockerill Club Challenge
All of our students have done an excellent job rising to the demand of Common Core. With the new, more rigorous standards, we've waived "so long" to the basic procedural problems of yesteryear. While many students are showing great conceptual understanding, computational fluency and endurance continues to be a struggle across the 4th grade. Much of this struggle can be traced back to a shared foundational problem: Insufficient fact mastery.
Mastery of the basic multiplication facts should typically be achieved by 3rd grade. But with the increasingly heavy curricular demands on our students and teachers, this skill can sometimes be overlooked. However, we can not stress enough how essential this basic skill is for ALL subsequent math. With our own limited class time, I've initiated the Cockerill Club Challenge to encourage kids to fill in their fact gaps outside of class. The challenge is simple: Any student who can complete 100 multiplication problems in 100 seconds (the time of our reigning champ, Mr. Cockerill), will get to join the Club and receive a boat load of perks including special lunches and their picture on the COCKERILL CLUB CHALLENGE math fact hall of fame.
Students will have a ton of resources to help practice their skills.
We need you to help drive this initiative home! Please encourage your student to use the resources above and tryout for the club. This will increase their fact speed and lower the cognitive burden they experience when taking on the critical problems we're solving every day in class. As always, please email me with any questions or tips. We appreciate everything you do!

Why Has Math Changed?
An insightful conversation about why math is being taught differently to younger generations. My ultimate outcome is that none of our students grow up to utter the words "I'm just not a math person," but rather confidently apply math to the real world.
