Book Card Guidelines:
The purpose of book cards is to challenge yourself to read from a variety of different genres this year. Three book cards are due each trimester, with the exception of one trimester having four book cards due. A total of 10 book cards are due by May 5, 2023 (this date is subject to change)
1. Students may choose only books that are in their current ZPD. (Challenge yourself to read at the higher end of your ZPD.)
2. Book cards must include student name, title of the book, author, ZPD, and a complete 5th grade summary of the book.
3. Book cards must include a detailed picture that represents the book. Pictures must be traced with thin sharpie and colored with colored pencils.
4. A book may only be used for one book card.
5. Book cards may not be started before the book is finished.
6. Class read aloud books may not be used for book cards.

biography - A story of a real person's life written by another person
Autobiography - The story of a real person's life that is written by that person
realistic fiction - A story using made up characters but could happen in real life
historical fiction - A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often the setting is real but the characters are made up from the author's imagination
animal tale - A story using an animal as the main character in the story
newberry medal winning book - A book that has won the Newberry Medal or Honor Award
fantasy - A story including elements that are impossible such as talking animals and magic powers
mystery or adventure - A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story
classic / traditional literature - Stories that are passed down from one group to the other in history: This includes folk takes, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths from different cultures
Science fiction graphic novel - A type of fantasy that uses science & technology (robots and machines)
graphic novel - A novel in comic-strip format
