• At Orangethorpe, we implement PBIS or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. At the beginning of the year, students are introduced to the ORCA Way matrices that help guide them in demonstrating positive behavior in the different areas of the school. These expectations are enforced and referenced throughout the year. 

    There is a school-wide incentive to follow the ORCA Way. Teachers can reward their students with dojo points that accumulate throughout the year. Each month, teachers reward students with spirit sticks to add to their Orangethorpe keychain. Students are also working to earn whole class rewards once they reach a certain number of total points. Students can also be rewarded dojo points by recess supervisors, nutrition services staff, administration, and any teacher or staff on campus! 

    If a student exhibits a behavior that does not align with the ORCA Way, there are a series of interventions in place to support the student. If the behavior is minor and has not become a pattern, the teacher will typically address it with the student and suggest a way to restore the situation. If the behavior has become a pattern, the student may receive a discipline notice which is sent home and documented by the teacher. If a specific behavior continues (or in the event of a major behavior), a student will receive an office discipline referral form. This form is sent home and administration decides what action to take from there. 

    My personal goal is to foster a classroom community where students are intrinsically motivated to maintain a respectful, safe, and calm learning environment. My job is to provide support through classroom accommodations and interventions, social/emotional learning, restorative practices, and regular parent communication.
