Greetings Fullerton Parents, Staff and Community,
We come to the close of another school year however, this year has been like no other that I remember. Our community is hurting and there is real pain from the lasting effects of COVID-19. People have lost their jobs and businesses. Parents fear that they won’t be able to provide for their families. Parents are worried about the safety and health of their children during this time. In addition to the pandemic and its crippling impact, we are again reminded of the devastating effects of racism with national news showing the death of George Floyd and others.
While we have had to face fear, uncertainty, and endure the pain of loss, our Fullerton story through this crisis has been one of hope and strength. I have been inspired by you, our Fullerton Community. Staff and parent committees, you worked hard and long to create plans in order to open up schools safely in August. The number of the ‘what if’ scenarios for which you had to plan was vast, but you showed your diligence and commitment to our children. Egleth Nuncci, you inspired me with your tireless advocacy and volunteer work in our community to ensure the needs of food and housing were met. Pastor Caleb, your work to lead a coalition of churches and people to provide supplies, books, and food to Fullerton School District families created unity. Teachers like Mark Sonny, who volunteered his voice to our new FSDTV cable channel and gave voice to other teachers to teach our children in new ways. Martha Pandel, and the rest of the staff and Food Service professionals; you served 475,000 meals in these last 12 weeks. You showed courage during the pandemic for the love of our kids. To a second grade teacher at Sunset Lane, your courage in writing me a letter sharing truth about the devastating effects of racism on our community inspired me. You shared truth of how the silence of good people about the acts of racism perpetuates discrimination. I am committed to our black community, our employees, families, and all children of color. We won’t tolerate racism or discrimination, and ultimately we will ensure the dignity of all our families, staff, and students. While our silence perpetuates racism, our words are not enough; our actions are also needed.
While I wanted to share a few of the people who have inspired me, I can’t even begin to tell you about all the numerous others who have inspired me as well. We have a strong community and one who gives generously to each other. I feel blessed to be able to serve our Fullerton Community and look forward to working with you all again next school year. We are opening school on August 11th and will be able to provide your family choices to have your students learn at home through distance learning, or if your family prefers, your child can learn at school 5 days a week with the same start and end times that we’ve done in the past. We will be sharing more on this, in greater depth, in the next couple of weeks in pamphlets, videos, web pages, and webinars, so that you can truly choose the educational program that you feel is right for your child in the safest way possible.
As we continue to plan for next year, you have all reminded me that the Fullerton story is one of hope. It is filled with a community of strong, generous, and loving people.
Thank you to all of you. I am grateful to all of you.
Thank you,
Dr. Bob Pletka
Superintendent

Greetings to our Fullerton School District family,
As the 2019-2020 school year comes to a close today, we want to start by giving a big shout out and #fsdgratitude to all of our amazing FSD employees. Thank you teachers, classified staff, and administrators for your extraordinary efforts and incredible work for our students, parents, and community over the past two and a half months.
On June 1st our staff will begin the process of preparing our schools for reopening in August. Our custodial and maintenance staff will be cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting each school to ensure that our schools are ready for our students and staff to return. Additionally, we will be sending out videos to our community throughout the summer to provide you with more information on the reopening of our schools. The videos we will be sending out will cover the measures we will be asking all students and employees to take in order to ensure everyone is able to return to school safely and to stay healthy when we return. Please continue to check for important messages we will be sending out over summer break.
Starting Monday, June 1st, we will reduce the number of meal pick-up locations from 17 to our 8 Title 1 Elementary Schools. Anyone under age 18 can receive meals from any of these 8 sites. The 8 meal distribution sites will be: Commonwealth, Maple, Richman, Raymond, Woodcrest, Orangethorpe, Pacific Drive, and Valencia Park Elementary Schools. For those of you that have been picking-up your meals at Acacia, Rolling HIlls, Beechwood, Hermosa, Laguna Road, Sunset Lane, Fisler, Fern, and Golden Hill, you may continue to pick up your meals at any of our 8 Title 1 Elementary Schools.
Best wishes for an enjoyable summer break!

Greetings to our Fullerton School District family,
We want to express our appreciation for all the good work our parents and staff are doing for our students.
To our Fullerton School District Community, this is a little Public Service Announcement: We have the census that is going on and we ask everybody to please fill out the census so that your voice can be heard, and so that this community can be represented; it's really important.
We've received some news from the governor about a 55 plus billion dollar deficit; the impact on school districts will be about 18 billion, but I do want you all to know that our number one priority is preparing for the start of school to ensure that your children are safe. We do have a healthy reserve in place for really difficult times; if there was ever an emergency or dire situation, this is it. Over the years we have prepared for this day and, if need be, we will use that reserve to ensure a very safe environment for our students.
As we prepare to bring our students back, we will be doing everything we can to make sure we have the right safety and health precautions in place. Rest assured we will start the 2020-2021 school year with a very safe and healthy environment for our students and staff; that remains our focus.
We will continue to have the strong programs that we have, and want our staff to know that you will be here with us because we need you. We need our staff to prepare for this and so, for those of you a bit nervous, rest assured you will be here to help us do the right thing for our students. For our parents, we want you to know that we will be bringing back the programs that make Fullerton School District such a special place.
To our parents and community, thank you for helping us celebrate our classified employees during classified employee week, May 18th through May 22nd. Our classified employees keep our district moving. They drive our buses, prepare our meals, serve our students, answer the phone, and help you in the offices. They also provide great services through our instructional support assistance, and do so many things behind the scenes that ensure our schools are running smoothly, are clean, and are prepared for our students. Thank you classified employees for all you do!
For our Fullerton School District parents and guardians, we sent out a survey through our messaging system on Tuesday, asking you how you would like your students to return to learning in the Fall. More than 4,000 of you have already responded, and we thank you for that. If you have not yet responded, please take the opportunity to do so. You can find the survey in our district app or on our homepage by clicking the Parent Fall Learning Survey button. Some of our school sites also have paper copies, or have staff with iPads asking parents these questions as you go to pick up lunches during this week. It is incredibly important to our planning for us to understand your current thoughts on physically coming back to school, learning from home, or a hybrid model with some physical attendance and some distance learning. We will be resending the survey this afternoon, but please only fill in this survey one time per student in your home. Please have your choices heard through this survey.
As many of you know we have been creating original television programming on channel 3 Spectrum local access cable. We have a great partnership with Discovery Education who have let us utilize some of their amazing videos to broadcast as well. You can now see all of our FSD produced content at a new website, FSDTV.org. You can search by grade level and by subject. We hope you take a moment to check out the amazing learning videos on this new website.
A big thank you to everyone; we look forward to working together to do what's right and be there for our children.
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Greetings Fullerton School District Parents, Community and Staff,
We are excited to announce a new program, FSD Extended Play, Summer Edition. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we understand that your summer may look very different this year. Parents may be looking for opportunities to have their child continue their learning after the school year ends. FSD Extended Play is a virtual summer school for students in grades 4-8 that will be offered from June 1st -26th. During the course of Extended Play, participating students will receive ELA, Math, and Arts lessons as well as other enrichment activities on a weekly basis, similar to what your child’s current teacher is providing. There will also be a few treats and surprises throughout the weeks to encourage students and reward them for their effort. For more information, please visit the FSD Extended Play, Summer Edition website to watch a video providing more specific information about our summer program as well as how to register. Registration will begin this Friday, May 15th and will remain open until Wednesday, May 27th.
As we are nearing the end of a long journey through distance learning, the elementary PE team wanted to bring something creative and impactful to students district-wide along with their usual focus on health and physical fitness. Fullerton School District's Elementary Physical Education Teachers are challenging students in a week-long physical education and nutrition challenge from May 18-25. During this week-long event, students will participate in engaging physical education and health activities at home. Two days will be fun, active challenges to do on their own, or compete with their families. For three of the days, students will submit their score via Google form to compete for participation awards, grade level score awards, and earn points for grade and school competitions. These are activities that they have been practicing during distance learning as assigned and showcased by our elementary physical education teachers. For the health component, students learn about the benefits of physical activity with age-appropriate language. Come join the fun and stay healthy!
This weekend we will be sending out a survey to all parents in the Fullerton School District. As a district we have created committees to plan options for how our students will come back in the fall. These plans may change based on CDC guidelines and our Governor’s guidelines for reopening our schools, but we really want our parents to tell us about their interest in students returning to school physically or learning at home in an online distance learning setting. Please take the time to fill in the survey as it will help guide our plans. Paper surveys will be available at your school sites next week during lunch pickup times as well.
Communications will be going out to all parents in the next two weeks with days this month or over the summer when iPad collection will be happening at your school sites. Throughout the summer we will need to collect most of the district iPads to refresh them, add new software, and swap some of the older iPads for newer models. Your sites will be in touch with dates and then we as a district will be communicating the dates through email, text, phone, and the district app as each school’s summer dates get closer for those turning in during the summer.
Thank you!

Greetings Fullerton School District Parents, Community and Staff,
This has been a difficult and trying time, but it’s also been a time that the entire community has shined; our teachers, our classified staff, food services workers on the front line, all of our community, our parents. Churches have stepped forward, our nonprofits have stepped up, everybody has come forward to help our kids, and together to make a difference, educationally, and nutritionally for our kids and families. I want to thank all of you.
Some of the Governor’s messages have pertained to what reopening schools may look like, and we will be providing more guidance on that in the next couple of weeks. We have some options, and for some of our families that have already expressed that they are not yet comfortable to bring their children back, we will be offering independent study. For our families that are ready to come back, we currently anticipate opening on August 11th, which is our 2020-2021 start date, and we look forward to sharing more about the safety precautions we will be taking to ensure our children are safe.
This week, we would like to express our own #FSDgratitude to our community. Thank you for all your support, appreciation, and caring as you have honored our teachers and nurses this week. Your heartfelt "thank you's" and kind words have been so meaningful and motivating for our staff.
As a reminder, during the week of May 17th through May 23rd we will be recognizing our hard working classified employees who work in our offices, clean our schools, and help to serve our students lunches. These employees keep our District running. Please mark the date.
Thank you!

Greetings Fullerton School District Parents, Community and Staff!
This week the Governor suggested starting the 2020-2021 school year in late July or early August. Currently, FSD’s start date is in early August on August 11th. We will continue to monitor this situation. We anticipated direction from the California Department of Education regarding the Governor’s message. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more information. We are creating plans to continue distance learning opportunities for the summer through the FSD Extended Play: Summer Edition.
April and May are the months we celebrate and honor our Fullerton School District employees. Last week, we honored our after-school professionals and we want to thank them for all their time and effort that they put in to help our students after school.
This week we honored the employees who truly keep our District and students moving. Tuesday, April 28th was School Bus Drivers Appreciation Day and we want to thank our hard working and committed bus drivers for all they do for our students.
Friday, May 1 is School Lunch Hero Appreciation Day. Even during this temporary school closure our Nutrition Services staff continues to provide over 10,000 meals per day and over 250,000 meals since our schools temporarily closed, Monday through Friday, to students 18 years and younger in the Fullerton community. Please give a loud shout out and thank you, or consider hanging a banner from your car when you pick-up your child’s grab and go meal to honor and celebrate our amazing Nutrition Services Staff, and all of their work in making sure our students have meals even during these times of Safer at Home.
Next week, May 4 through May 8 is Teacher Appreciation Week and specifically Tuesday, May 5th is Teacher Appreciation Day. Our teachers have helped our students shift from classroom instruction to distance learning and go above and beyond to help our students learn, grow, and succeed. Please join us in thanking and celebrating our teachers, school lunch heroes, and bus drivers this week and next. If you have a special menu or thank you to share with our bus drivers, school lunch heroes, or teachers, please post it on social media and use our #fsdgratitude.
Thank you students, parents, and community members for your support and strength during these times. We hope you all have a great week and stay healthy.
Thank you!

Greetings Fullerton School District Parents, Community and Staff,
I want to start with a big shout out to all of our parents, working with their kids on distance learning. I also want to take a moment to acknowledge our teachers and all of the work that they are doing to meet the needs of our kids.
I am proud to say that we have kicked off Fullerton School District EP Extended Play Program to further support our students. Our parents sometimes ask me, “What did my child miss through the school closure? What were the skills, the State standards that kids need to know that may not have been covered?” So what we’ve done is put in one place, by grade level, those skills and standards. Additionally, we have the lessons and assessments to help our kids learn those valuable skills.
As a part of our Distance Learning plan, the Fullerton School District continually looks to provide our students with a variety of opportunities for learning. We are excited to launch our new extended learning program. In addition to the daily or weekly learning plans provided by their teacher, FSD Extended Play is designed to support students in grades 4-8, who would like the option to extend their learning. FSD Extended Play is a collection of interactive ELA and Math standards-based lessons that are typically addressed in the second half of the school year. As students click through a lesson, they will go through various instructional activities addressing elements of learning. The learning activities include opportunities for students to Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Some of our 8th grade parents were concerned about high school readiness for math. FSD Extended Play has incorporated critical math standards that focus specifically on content to prepare our 8th grade students for high school. To start extending your child’s learning opportunities, please go to the FSD 360 Distance Learning website and click on the Student Resources page.
Together we can do this, I look forward to the time very soon, when we can all meet together face to face. We miss you all, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bob Pletka
Superintendent

Good Afternoon FSD Parents and Staff,A big thank you to the community for stepping forward during this crisis and helping others that are in need.
FSD Staff Makes the Difference
We would like to thank all of our Fullerton School District employees who during this time of need have stepped up and helped our students by serving lunches, calling families, distributing learning materials, and providing high quality distance learning instruction. In this time of change and uncertainty, our FSD employees have shown that they have commitment, grit, and determination to meet the needs of our students and community. Over the past month our dedicated FSD employees have embodied the words of Helen Keller who said, “The world is moved along not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of tiny pushes of each honest worker.” Thank you all for your “tiny pushes” and don’t forget to show your thanks on #FSDgratitude.
Grading Statement and Art Showcase
The Fullerton School District is committed to providing quality distance learning instruction, district resources, and social emotional support to students and families during school closures due to COVID-19. Based on state and local guidelines from the California Department of Education and Orange County Department of Education, we strongly believe in developing grading practices that ensure “no harm” to students as we transition to Distance Learning. At this time, the Fullerton School District will establish a “pass” grading system. A pass grading system means that all students TK-8th grade will receive a “pass” on their third trimester/fourth quarter grades. Through the lens of equity, teachers will continue to provide positive feedback to students on work performance, hold high expectations for student engagement, and follow up with families to provide support. School sites will continue to reach out to students and families through various communication methods such as phone calls, emails, apps, and learning management systems. The grading policy for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year was created by teachers, principals, district administration, and support staff. We continue to work together to provide students with care and compassion, especially during these uncertain times.
We are so happy to announce that we have an Art and Photography Showcase coming up. The theme is Happiness Comes From.. the showcase is open to all FSD students. All submissions are to be sent digitally. Submissions will be featured on FSD TV, Social Media and website. This is our first art showcase of many more in the weeks to follow. Flyers can be found on Peachjar and on the FSD 360 Distant Learning website, Parents, Students and Teacher tabs on the VAPA link. A big thank you to our All the Arts Artists for spreading YOUR happiness to our students!
Internet Access and FSD TV
Please remember that we have a company called Human I-T who you can call or text for help with getting free or low cost internet. Their number to text is (562) 372-6925 and texting is the fastest way to get help. You can also call them instead at (888) 391-7249. If your family is in a situation where you cannot get home internet for your students in 4th to 8th grade to do distance learning, please reach out to your principal or office manager for assistance as the district has some other resources. We also want to let you know about our continuing FSD TV on Spectrum Channel 3. The shows we create can also be viewed on Youtube, Facebook, and on a new link that the city has set up for us that is linked on our distance learning page. We are constantly introducing new activities like the family challenges and a new FSD Secret Missions program that your students will want to play along with!
Special Funding for COVID-19 Response
This week, Fullerton School District received $219,996 in SB 117 funding which amounts to a little over $17 per student. The purpose of these funds is to assist school districts with costs associated with COVID-19 such as providing meals to students, personal protective equipment and cleaning products, and materials necessary to provide distance learning to students.
FSD has spent all of these welcomed funds to purchase masks, gloves, and goggles; equipment and supplies to provide multiple locations for meal distributions; additional cleaning products to disinfect district facilities currently in use; and “hot-spots” to provide internet access to our students and families who currently don’t have internet access.
Thank you to our State Representatives who made these funds quickly available.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bob Pletka
Superintendent

Greetings Fullerton Families!
We appreciate everyone working together to face this crisis. As a community, we are working to provide opportunities for our families. We are excited about the new resources that are featured each week. If you have not recently looked at the website, please go check out the fun activities that you can do as a family, such as a Build-Your-Own Schedule Activity. Building consistent schedules brings comfort and a sense of safety to kids.
We continue to provide meals at all of our Elementary Schools including Beechwood and Fisler, Monday through Friday between 11:00 - 1:00. Because many parents prefer to keep their children inside during the shelter-in-place, we no longer require students to be with you when picking up a meal. Please be prepared to provide your child’s name and school, and the name of their teacher.
All the Arts For All the Kids artists have created easy to follow lessons in Visual Arts, Dance, Music, Theater and Media Arts for students to work on at home. Our artists have also created fun art activities and games for the whole family to enjoy. These lessons can be found on the Fullerton School District’s 360: Distance Learning webpage. The resources can be found on both the parent and student pages, under Visual and Performing Arts. We are continuing to add new lessons to the site each week. My personal favorite is a folkloric dance or baile folklórico called Llano Grande from Jalisco.
Weekly Family Challenges are posted on the website under the Parent Resources tab. Each week focuses on a theme with suggested family educational activities. The goal is to have fun, learn, and promote healthy habits. For example, there is a gratitude activity you can do with your child. You can write letters of thanks to medical personnel. Another example is a math challenge such as creating a mancala board out of an egg carton. Families can post photos of their weekly activity on social media using #fsdfamilychallenge or email photos to fsdfamilychallenge@myfsd.org.
District personnel and teachers have been working hard to design and produce FSD TV. We will have educational programming on Spectrum channel 3 from 8:30 until 2 each weekday. We have a great partnership with the city of Fullerton, Discovery Education, and our teachers who have been coming in to film educational programs. Each week we will build in more original content as our talented team learns more about television production. We will be posting all original content to YouTube and Facebook as well.
We want to make sure you and your students spend some time on our parent and student resource pages to see all the amazing things students can be doing at home after they have finished their work assigned by their teachers. I have two students at home now, and I know that they are often looking for things to do once they have finished their school work. If you go to our home page, and click on distance learning, you will get to our FSD 360 page. Click on the Parents button where we highlight Duo Lingo for learning languages, Khan academy for extra help with almost every subject, the educational programming provided by your local PBS station, Social-Emotional games to play with your students, and an amazing resource on commonsensemedia.org called Wide Open School. When you click on Wide Open School, then click “We’re a family”, select your grade grouping, then you will see a page with subjects to explore. Each one of these tiles opens up to a huge selection of resources to explore. If you click science in the kinder to five band you get links to mystery science, how to be an engineer videos, and even introductory computer science lessons on coding. Going back to our FSD360 main page, click the students button, and we are highlighting Thrively, our program where all 4th-8th grade students in the district have done a strengths-based assessment. You can ask your student to show you their Thrively assessment and students can explore their interests. We also highlight Discovery Education which all students can access through their Clever app on a district device. Scan to the bottom and we have a set of literature links curated by our district’s Technology and Library Media Assistants. These are just a few of the resources on each page that students and parents can explore.
During this time of staying home and self-isolation, both parents and children can feel lonely and isolated. Mental health experts agree that helping others is one of the most important factors in maintaining our own wellbeing in times of uncertainty and has the ability to lift our spirits and motivate us. Consider this a challenge – how are you helping others? Here are some of the most common ways that we hear of people supporting others while still adhering to the CDCs social distance protocols:
- helping the seniors in your neighborhood with shopping
- donating food at collection points throughout the City or at our District office
- making healthy meals with your family (yes this can be done!)
- creating a video or picture helping others to encourage friends and family
- donating blood during this time of shortages due to Covid-19
- calling or video chatting with family and friends who you have not spoken to in some period
- Sending words of encouragement of showing acts of gratitude for those providing essential work outside their homes (grocery workers, nurses, doctors, custodians, food service workers, postal workers)
If you feel comfortable in sharing, please share the encouragement and pass it along to others. We are setting up a HASHTAG campaign - #FSDGRATITUDE if you would like to share your efforts and their impact on others!

Dear FSD Parents and Community,After listening to the Governor’s press conference on school closures yesterday and reading State Superintendent Tony Thurmond’s letter, we are informing you that we should expect Fullerton School District schools to be closed until the end of the school year. While we will be open to changes, we need to prepare for school closures until the end of the school year. While schools have temporarily closed, we are committed to continuing student learning. Moreover, each week we will implement more support for our students.
Our mission is clear. We are to provide a robust education system and student support through a new model of distance learning. You will begin to see additional support as we implement “FSD 360° A Circle of Support.” For example, we have fully implemented a meals program in our District that serves over 4000 meals Monday to Friday. In addition to the nutritional needs, we are now offering social emotional support through phone and web resources.
We would like to thank our FSD Staff who have worked long and hard to provide meals, social emotional resources, new mediums of communication, technology support, logistics, curricular resources, art kits, purchasing, emergency work orders, and so much more.
FSD understands the importance of maintaining social distancing to slow down the spread of COVID-19. Essential employees serving meals and distributing materials at sites will maintain social distancing of 6 feet and will also wear masks and gloves.
FSD is continuing to provide meals to students, 18 years and younger, Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at all of our elementary schools, and our K-8 schools Fisler and Beechwood. Students from Ladera Vista, Nicolas, and Parks may pick up their meals at any of our 17 sites serving meals.
Each school office will have phone office hours, using a temporary school office phone number, daily from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. We are inviting all parents and community members who may have questions to reach out to our staff between these hours using the temporary school office phone number or by emailing the principal. The temporary school office phone number to reach office staff and the principal’s email can be found three ways. First, your school’s website will have a pop-up message as soon as you open the webpage that will provide you with the school’s temporary school office phone number and principal’s email address. Second, you can call your school’s main regular phone number and listen to the answering message for this information. Third, there is a sign posted on your school’s office door with the school’s temporary school phone number and the principal’s email address.
We are currently providing school registration services at the front entrance to the District Office at 1401 W. Valencia Avenue in Fullerton, every day between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. The registration services provided will include: enrolling new students to the District who are not currently enrolled in school, providing registration packets for next year, receiving completed registration packet, or receiving registration related paperwork including intra and inter district transfers. We would like to encourage parents to make copies of any documents that are required for registration and bring them with you to the registration services table at the District Office. If parents are unable to make copies, we will provide copying service of select registration documents on an as needed basis.
There are many ways for students and parents to get technology support for student devices. Please go to our website at www.fullertonsd.org and click on Home Internet Login Instructions and Technology Support. We will have tech support tables set up at least once a week at every site and your Principal will communicate the day this support will be available at your school. Our website has a form that you can fill out to receive a call back for tech support, as well as, phone numbers to call. If you call and leave a message, please leave as much information as possible including your student’s name, their school, their teacher, and detailed information about the problem you are having with your student’s device. Students can do their homework on ANY device in the home that is connected to the Internet, they DO NOT have to use their district iPad.
Many of you responded to our phone, text, and email survey regarding your internet access at home. Office staff members are calling this week and next in order to establish how many families in 4th through 8th grades do not have home Internet access. We are now working with a company called Human I-T who can help families get free and low cost Internet service. Texting them is the fastest way to get Internet service. You can reach Human I-T by TEXT at 1-562-372-6925, or you can call them at 1-888-391-7249. We also have information on our website at www.fullertonsd.org under the “Parents” tab regarding low cost internet options.
We welcome you to check out the district website and click on “FSD 360 Distance Learning” for resources for parents and students. We have fun family activities that include art and poetry, weekly challenges, technology tips, and social emotional learning support. Parents, you will begin to see us implement new next steps each week as we work to fully implement “FSD 360°” for all of our students with diverse needs including but not limited to English Learners, Students with Special Needs, Gifted and Talented students, and student’s without Internet access. School sites will be in contact with you directly for more detailed information on your child’s distance learning instruction.
We realize there is so much change happening each day and appreciate our entire FSD community and staff during these difficult times. We are grateful to all of you for your grit and how you have dealt with the drastic changes being asked of all of us in just a couple short weeks. We appreciate your empathy and your courage in dealing with the most significant crisis in the nation in decades.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bob PletkaSuperintendent -

Greetings Fullerton School District Family:
We are in unprecedented times with one of the largest crises of over a decade. We are not only facing the impact of the Coronavirus itself, but also the social impact of the virus on families such as the loss of jobs, school closures and social isolation. While this adversity is large, so are the hearts and courage of our Fullerton Community. Together the Fullerton community has stepped up and faced challenges like fire, earthquakes, and recession in the past. Together, we have overcome these challenges and like those challenges of the past, together we will overcome this present challenge. The challenge of school closures will likely continue for at least another 6 weeks until May 8th. However, Governor Newsom has repeated that we shouldn’t be surprised if the closure continues until the end of the school year
FSD 360° Distance Learning Plan
While schools have closed, student learning must continue. We have a plan that we are calling FSD 360° - ‘A Circle of Support’. Our plan is based on support and resources from school, district, and community. Together we can take actions to make learning continue. We have a plan to provide support for social emotional, art, STEM, and core academic needs. We will be able to meet these needs through a robust distance learning plan, printed materials, art kits, and teleconferencing. We are working to meet all the equity needs of our families. Together, our schools, district and community can provide our students a ‘Circle of Support.’
Fullerton School District schools are developing site instructional plans to ensure that high quality education continues during these uncertain times. During the week of March 30th, Fullerton School District teachers will contact their students and parents with an instruction plan that includes information on instruction, activites, and modes of communication. In person, parents can pick up an instructional packet at every school site from 11:00am-1:00pm. We will have more information on books, instructional games, and art projects that will be distributed to families at selected sites. Parents of all FSD students are welcome to pick up the resources and activities.
Please visit our website often. Go to www.fullertonsd.org and click on Distance Learning. We have resources there for parents and students. We will be updating this information as we develop or find new resources that we think are important for our families. Your site and your child’s teacher will provide the learning plan for your students, but the district is providing additional resources for every grade level.
Social Emotional Support
We recognize that this is a very unsettling and challenging time for students, families, and our community. The Fullerton School District believes in educating the whole child and that means providing for education, social, emotional, and physical growth and enrichment. In difficult times like these, students and families may find themselves in need of some social-emotional assistance and support. If you or your child is in need of some social-emotional resources and support, please visit our website and link to our “Social-Emotional Learning Resources” under our “COVID-19 Information and Guidelines” button.
Meal Distribution and Donations
During this time of temporary school closure, Fullerton School District will continue to distribute two free meals Monday through Friday from 11am to 1pm at all of our 15 elementary schools as well as Beechwood and Fisler. Students from Ladera Vista, Nicolas, and Parks Junior High Schools may pick up their meals at any of the 17 distribution sites. We will also be providing non-perishable food items as they are received as donations from community families and businesses. If you want to make donations, you may do so Monday through Friday between 10 AM and 1 PM at either the District Office located at 1401 W. Valencia Dr., Fullerton, CA 92833 or Pacific Drive Elementary School located at 1501 W. Valencia Dr. Fullerton, CA 92833.
Communication
The Fullerton School District is committed to providing frequent and detailed communication to our students, families, and community. You will continue to receive messages from us through phone calls, text messages, and emails. We would also encourage all families to download the free FSD mobile app through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store in order to have 24 hour access to all of the District's latest communications. In addition, the Fullerton School District website, www.fullertonsd.org, is a great information and learning resource for students and their families.
While these are difficult times, together we will overcome this adversity by working together. You are very important to us, and we will continue to update you as we get new information.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bob Pletka
Superintendent

Good Afternoon Fullerton School District Parents and Community Members,
These are challenging times. We know that many of you are facing difficult situations, and we are here for you. In order to ensure the safety of all our students, families, and staff, Fullerton School District (FSD) is following and implementing the newly issued guidelines from Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). We continue to work with these agencies as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA), the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) and other north Orange County School Districts. This is a rapidly evolving situation and FSD will continue to update our community as we have new information. We will be providing you with these updates via email, our phone messaging system, and information available on our website at fullertonsd.org.
Based on the CDC guidelines and Governor Newsom’s press conference on March 17th, we are dismissing school (temporary school closure) for eight weeks starting from our initial closure date of Monday, March 16, 2020. We are tentatively scheduled to reopen school on Monday, May 11, 2020; however, this date may change based on the COVID-19 situation. During Governor Newsom’s press conference he indicated that schools could remain on dismissal status for the remainder of this school year.
To meet the needs of students and families in the entire District, we have a plan to continue student learning during the school closure. We will provide a variety of delivery models for learning and teaching that include: distance learning, hands-on activities, family educational games, books, art, and traditional printed instructional materials. We will be providing you with more information on how to access these learning materials and resources when we return from Spring Break. While FSD schools are temporarily closed and many things have been canceled, we are committed to students and their continued learning!
We will continue to provide breakfast and lunch for all Fullerton children under the age of 18 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm during the week:
- For Spring Break Monday, March 23rd through Thursday, March 26th breakfast and lunch will be provided (Friday, March 27th is a school holiday and no meals will be provided) at all elementary and K-8 schools in FSD (no meals served at Ladera Vista, Nicolas, and Parks Junior High Schools, however students attending those school can go to any FSD school to pick-up food).
- Beginning Monday, March 30th and until further notice, meal distribution will resume Monday through Friday until May 8th at all elementary and K-8 schools in FSD (no meals served at Ladera Vista, Nicolas, and Parks Junior High Schools, however students attending those school can go to any FSD school to pick-up food). As new information becomes available, we will provide all families and community members with updates.
Please visit our website at fullertonsd.org to get more information on free and low-cost home internet options. These free internet options are for a limited time and have charges after 60 days. Families will need to cancel the free internet options based on the provider’s policies or they will be charged for the internet service to continue. One of the low-cost options even includes a free Chromebook, so please explore all options listed on our website and make the best decision for your family.
There are families that have needs for food and basic necessities during this time of crisis. Please visit our Food and Community Resources Page for more information on how to access these resources. Our staff is dedicated to the Fullerton community and is seeking ways to help Fullerton families in need. We are accepting donations of non-perishable items and basic necessities at Pacific Drive and the District Office Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Please look for the donation boxes under the blue sunshade pop-ups. We want to do everything we can to assist our families during this time of need. We care very much about each of you.
While FSD schools are temporarily closed and many things have been canceled, we are committed to students and their continued learning!
Sincerely,
Dr. Robert Pletka

Hello Fullerton School District Parents,
The message you received Saturday morning listed 9 sites for lunch and breakfast pickup. This was not correct. We will continue to offer breakfast and lunch next week, March 16th through March 20th, to all children under the age of 18 through curbside pick up at all school sites from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Children must be present in order to receive their lunch meal. In addition, breakfast can be picked up for the following day.
We also wanted to ensure that everyone understands that all programs are closed for the next two weeks, March 16th through March 29th. This includes Preschool, ASES, TheLAB, and all before school and after school clubs, classes, or programs run by FSD. As we receive additional information, we will notify parents of the start up date for these programs.
Thank you.

Good Afternoon,
The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families will always remain our top priority. As of today, there are no confirmed cases of individuals diagnosed with the Novel Coronavirus in our District.
Out of an abundance caution, in an effort to limit the spread of the Novel Coronavirus, and with guidance from local, state, and federal public health experts, it is anticipated that the Fullerton School District Board of Trustees will take action tonight and temporarily close all schools beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, returning to school as usual on Monday, March 30, 2020 (note: this time includes our regularly scheduled week off for Spring Break).
In order to continue providing educational opportunities for our students, today each student has been provided with a five-day at home learning plan for the next week.
At this time it is our plan that our student meal program will continue from March 16th through March 20th. We will provide details by 8 p.m. on Sunday evening on how students will access our student meal program.
Facts and circumstances regarding the Novel Coronavirus are changing quickly. We will continue to monitor the situation and update our community.
Thank you to our students, staff, and families for their patience and trust as we all work through this public health crisis. Please visit www.fullertonsd.org for updates and links to additional resources.
Thank you.

Good Afternoon,
In an abundance of caution, and in accordance with the California Department of Public Health, effective immediately Fullerton School District is cancelling “non-essential” gatherings with an expected attendance of 250 people or more. This cancellation includes all future Open House nights at our schools, Robot Nation, Writers Guild Celebrations, field trips, and the Speech and Debate District Tournament scheduled for March 14, 2020.
The California Department of Public Health has very specific guidelines related to school closures and has stated that, “This guidance does not apply to activities such as attendance at regular school classes, work, or essential services.” Any decision to close schools will be done at the direction of the California Department of Public Health, and Fullerton School District has ongoing and frequent communication with the California Department of Public Health, Orange County Office of Education, and Orange County Health Care Agency.
Fullerton School District will continue to monitor the situation and will keep you informed of any changes.
Thank you.

Good Evening Fullerton Families and Community,
The health and wellness of our students, staff, and community is always our top priority.
As you are aware, the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) has formally acknowledged that the spread of the CoronaVirus will continue to increase – but the current risk to the general public continues to be low.
While the risk of contracting the Coronavirus is deemed low, we still want to provide regular updates to you on what the Fullerton School District is doing to maintain a healthy learning environment for your student. As per our communications from earlier this week:
- We will continue to work directly with the Orange County Health Care Agency to receive the latest information. We will be monitoring information from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) and adjust our plans and procedures as necessary.
- We are meeting with staff regularly keeping them up to date on information and recommendations made by the healthcare agencies.
- We are providing guidance to staff on how to ensure our students and staff are taking the necessary precautions to prevent transmission, such as proper hand washing methods.
- We have increased cleaning efforts on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, desks, counters, and electronics throughout FSD schools.
- We are posting prevention reminders in common work areas and classrooms. We are also providing lessons to students on effective handwashing.
- We have added hand sanitizing stations, tissues, and cleaning supplies to all the schools according to the Healthy School Act.
We appreciate your continued support and partnership – and we will continue to keep you informed. If you need additional information, please review updates at our website fullertonsd.org.
Thank you and have a great weekend

Dear Fullerton School District Parents and Community Members,
The health and wellness of our students, staff, and community is a top priority. As you are aware, the coronavirus is a newly discovered respiratory virus that has been diagnosed in the United States and other countries around the world.
While the Orange County Healthcare Agency (OCHA) acknowledges the “situation is rapidly evolving,” they also acknowledge that the current risk to the general public is low. Only one person in Orange County has been identified with the virus and has recovered. While the risk of contracting coronavirus is deemed low at this time by OCHA, we do want to take the necessary steps to keep our students and families safe.
With a goal of slowing the entry of the virus into the United States, on February 2nd, the federal government implemented a series of travel restrictions and warnings on travel to and from China, South Korea, Iran, Japan, and Italy. Per the Orange County Healthcare Agency, if you or a family member has visited any of these countries you should avoid contact with others and follow the voluntary self-quarantine recommendations for at least 14 days. More information is available on the OCHA website. If students are absent due to self-quarantine, the District will work to establish an independent study contract so that the student may continue their schooling during the 14-day period.
Tips to protect yourself and others:
- Wash hands with liquid soap and water, rubbing for at least 20 seconds and use alcohol based hand sanitizer when soap is not available.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing and throw the tissue in the trash.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- If you or your child has flu-like symptoms, including a fever, stay home until you or your child are fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
For more information in multiple languages, visit the OCHA’s website at:
www.ochealthinfo.com/phs/about/epidasmt/epi/dip/prevention/novel_coronavirus
Fullerton School District (FSD) will be dedicated to disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as door handles/knobs, desks, school supplies, lunch tables, deep cleaning bathrooms, and more. Additionally, hand sanitizer will be provided in all common areas (lunch and snack areas) and to the playground supervisors.
The District’s Student Support Department works closely with the OCHA and the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) in order to maintain a healthy school environment for students, staff, and community. FSD adheres to all health policies and guidelines as set forth by both agencies.
Please know that the safety and wellness of students, staff, and community is our number one priority in FSD. If we all continue to adhere to the daily precautions as mentioned above, we can help ensure our students and community remain healthy. Please share this information with your family and caregivers. FSD will continue to provide additional updates as needed.
If you have any questions regarding school attendance, an independent study contract, or District procedures, please contact the Fullerton School District at (714) 447-7400.
