How do Reading Workshop and Wonders complement each other?
The California ELA Standards are the content that educators must teach. The standards cover the specifics for teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Grammar and vocabulary are also covered. In the Fullerton School District, we support broad literacy practices and teach all areas of English Language Arts. The Reading Units of Study used within a Reading Workshop model is one essential approach for teaching the standards. The goal of Reading Workshop is to develop communities of readers that are proficient in skills and strategies that support accountable independent reading and more. This is one aspect of teaching English Language Arts. We rely on the resources and materials provided by McGraw-Hill's Wonders program for all the other areas specified in the ELA Standards. Wonders supports foundational skills, text complexity, text-based questions, and many other areas that build such skills. Wonders strongly complements the Reading Workshop model, especially for developing and supporting capable, independent readers.

The MAPs have been downloaded and put into each grade level tab on the left hand side of the page. If you are short on time, skip the introductory overview and go to the specific Rules of Thumb. The direct link to the page is above and also attached below.
Foundational Skills
"The Foundational Skills Guidance Documents offer concrete definitions and examples of the most pressing foundational content taught to kindergarten and first grade students, with a focus on phonemic awareness and structured phonics.
