Homework is an extension of classroom instruction related to learning objectives and grade-level content standards. It may include pencil and paper tasks as well as reading, Internet search, watching a specific program, long-term projects, etc. With the exception of long-term projects, homework should not be assigned on weekends or during winter or spring break. The Fullerton School District has established homework guidelines for the suggested amount of time to be spent on homework and the type and purpose of homework. Based on research, the following time guidelines have been established.
Primary students: 10-30 minutes per night.
Upper elementary students: 30-90 minutes per night.
Middle school/junior high students: 50-120 minutes per night.
FSD has developed a Parent Homework Communication Form that facilitates information sharing between parents and teachers/school to identify homework issues and help students thrive.

FSD Teachers Explain Common Core Math Concepts for Parents- Fullerton School District Teachers are developing videos to support parent understanding of Common Core Mathematics through specific Common Core Standards and Mathematical Practices. These videos are designed to help parents understand why topics are taught in multiple ways so you can support your children. The FSD Math Homework Support YouTube Channel will grow over time.
A Parent’s Guide to Success- This brochure was put together by the National PTA. It provides a list by grade level of the key items students should be learning in English language arts and mathematics. It also lists activities that parents can do at home to support their child’s learning. The guide also has methods for helping parents to approach teachers about the Common Core.
California State Assessment Guide- This guide by the National PTA gives a description of the California Common Core State Standards and information about the new assessments, sample test questions, overview of accountability, and additional resources for parents.
Common Core Video Series - This video series by the National PTA is designed to provide more information about the Common Core to parents and to support the transition from the California Standards to the new California Common Core State Standards. There are videos for both English language arts and mathematics.
Achieve the Core -This website is full of free information for educators to understand and implement the Common Core successfully in the classroom with lessons in ELA and mathematics, practice problems, and other resources. Parents will also find it useful to see how Common Core is being taught in the classroom.
Parent Roadmaps -These publications were developed by the Council of Great City Schools. Each grade level has a specific brochure that provides detailed expectations of the Common Core Mathematics. There are grade level examples using parent-friendly language, how to work with your child at home, and Spanish versions are available.
Eureka Math Tips for Parents -This library of print materials was designed to assist parents in supporting their child with Common Core math at home. A few videos are also posted on this site.
7th & 8th Grade Math Links -Mr. Andy Montoya, Math Teacher at Ladera Vista, shares a few of his favorite videos to support parents in understanding Common Core mathematics. He plans to update his links over the next few years.
